Meet Renata Creech
Couples therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia, and founder of Life Happens Counseling, PLLC.
Hi, I’m Renata
she/her
Couples therapy is a major focus of my practice.
I work with couples experiencing recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, betrayal, and uncertainty about whether the relationship can be repaired. Many are exhausted from having the same painful conversations and no longer knowing how to reach each other.
I am not a passive therapist in the room.
My approach is structured, direct, and collaborative. I help couples slow down what is happening between them in real time, especially when conversations turn into defensiveness, criticism, shutdown, blame, or distance. I make room for honesty, emotion, and humor, but I will not simply watch the same painful cycle take over the session.
I love helping couples put together the pieces of a puzzle that often does not make sense when they are in the middle of it. Together, we look at what is driving the conflict and what would need to change for the relationship to feel different.
My work is grounded in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, parts work, attachment-informed therapy, and trauma-informed care. These approaches help me look beneath the surface argument and stay focused on the pattern that keeps pulling couples into the same painful place.
Personally, I know that relationships and families can be shaped by grief, loss, change, repair, and new beginnings. I’m a mother and stepmother, and I have an adorable old goldendoodle. I have lived through major transitions, remarriage, immigration, and years of moving, adapting, and rebuilding. Those experiences do not make therapy about me, but they do shape how I sit with couples facing painful and uncertain moments.
I welcome heterosexual couples, LGBTQ+ couples, and nonbinary or gender-diverse partners. My goal is to create a space where both partners are taken seriously, difficult things can be said honestly, and the work stays focused on understanding the pattern clearly enough that something different can begin.
Education, Licensure, and Specialized Training
Couples therapy requires more than general therapy skills. I continue to invest in advanced clinical training so I can bring structure, clarity, and steadiness to complicated relationship work.
